ATP consists of the nitrogen base adenine, ribose sugar and 3 phosphate groups.

The last 2 phosphate groups are attached by high energy bonds.

 

ATP-ADP Cycle

Using the nexyme ATP synthase, ADP is converted into ATP in a process called phosphorylation, and energy is stored in the high energy bonds between the last two phosphate groups.  ATP is converted to ADP when high energy bonds are broken by rther enzyme ATPase, releasing a phosphate group and energy.
